St George's Day
As the patron saint of England, Saint George is a bit of a mysterious character.
While his fame as a Christian figure cannot be contested, no one is really
certain who he was. It is generally believed that he was an officer in the Roman army
who was beheaded for protesting the Emperor's persecution of Christians. His fame
grew as the story of his bravery and commitment to the Church spread across
Europe. As a result of his acts as a crusader, he is also the patron saint of soldiers.

St George's banner, the red cross of a martyr on a white background, was first adopted
as the uniform of British soldiers and later becom the flag of England.
Over the centuries, his legend has populated literature and folklore.
The most mysthic story of St George tell of a victorious battle versus a dragon;
a tale that has grown into a universal metaphor for gallant service and brave acts.
He is also present in Book 1 of Spencer's Faerie Queen,
and gets a mention in Shakespeare's Henry V.

While the character himself is still a bit of a mystery,
his fame and the pride felt about him among Christians and Catholics over
centuries is a centainty.
What we know for sure, is that April 23rd had been a day to celebrate him
in England since 1222.
